What is the Difference Between a 4-Star & a 5-Star Hotel?

While there is no official rule book for determining the exact features a hotel would require to be considered 5-Star, we’ve created a list to help you distinguish between 4-Star & 5-Star hotels.  And while 4-Star hotels are quite nice, you might just be a bit spoiled after staying at a 5-Star.

Decor & Appearance:
Some upgrades you might notice in a 5-Star hotel appearance-wise would be fresh flowers, original artwork, and custom-tailored linens, tableware and fabrics.

Services:
A 5-Star hotel would offer poolside food, concierge and childcare services, while a 4-Star hotel would most likely not offer these.

Dining & More:
While you’re likely to find a good meal at a 4-Star hotel, you’re not likely to find a gourmet restaurant with a renowned chef there.  But at a 5-Star, bring on the fine dining, baby.  Chefs with accolades and restaurants with the highest standards are typically what you’ll find at a 5-Star hotel.  You’ll also notice at your next 5-Star hotel stay that there will be little perks here and there at no additional charge.  We’ve seen things like complimentary coffee bars, turndown service upgrades like pillow spray instead of chocolates, free bottled water and even welcome gifts like free tequila, free pool bags, enhanced bathroom toiletries and extra special attention and care from a personal concierge.

Bonus Tip:
If you’re longing to stay at more luxury hotels, in general, but don’t quite have an all-luxury budget yet, look at luxury hotels in locations with a lower standard or cost of living than others.  For example, we were able to get a lower price at The Ritz-Carlton in New Orleans than that of The Ritz-Carlton in New York City.
